On November 10, Dr. Andrea Viski of STRI presented on free zones and strategic trade controls as part of a renowned panel organized by CRDF on "Special Economic Zones: Addressing Proliferation Challenges through Best Practices in SEZ Management." The panel also included Dr. Piotr Stryszowski, Senior Economist at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and Maria Camila Moreno, Executive Director of the Trade Zone Association of the Americas. The event was moderated by Scott Jones of STRI, the Stimson Center, and Tradesecure.
The event explored strategies to mitigate conventional and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) proliferation risks in free zones and addressed topics such as legal frameworks, the roles of different SEZ stakeholders, training and outreach, SEZ management, and best practices. The panel engaged in lively discussion that included viewpoints from industry, SEZ operators, public officials, international organizations, business associations, and researchers.
