Emerging Technologies and Customs Enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540

The Strategic Trade Research Institute (STRI) organized the event, "Emerging Technologies and Customs Enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540," on January 27, 2022. The event was sponsored by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) through voluntary contributions received from the Government of the Republic of Korea. The event features an expert panel discussion on ways that emerging technologies can help strengthen Customs enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540. Panelists discuss the technologies available to Customs and their applications as well as share national experiences of integrating technologies. The discussion focuses on concrete technology solutions as well as the future landscape for further strengthening the role of Customs in UNSCR 1540 enforcement.

Opening remarks were given by Mr. Sunghoon Kim, Counselor, UN 1st Committee, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations and Mr. Ismael Balla, representing the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA).

The event was moderated by Mr. Peter Heine, Senior Advisor in Global Security Technology & Policy, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

  The panelists included Milena Budimirovic, Senior Technical Officer, World Customs Organization; Sanaullah Abro, Director Risk Management Systems, Pakistan Customs; and Andrea Viski, Director, Strategic Trade Research Institute (STRI).
